Broward FL Shiba Needs More Help Than Another Shiba In The Same Circumstances

I am a sucker for injured and sick animals. When I was a kid, I used to go to the local tourist trap and buy all the china animals that had legs missing because I thought I was saving them. They lived on a shelf in my room, carefully balanced so that they stood up like the other “healthy” animal figurines did. I’m still a damned sucker, which is why this dog has made such an impression on me.

His name is Foxy, he’s not neutered and his age is “unknown” although from the pattern of white on his face, I’d judge him to be in the 8-12 range.  I don’t know much about lesions, but he could have a galloping case of mange or allergies and his toenails just make me want to cry.  If you live in the Broward area, could you at least donate to have those damn things cut, please?

ETA: Are those ligature marks on his left front leg? Mischa thinks the staining on his paws and hindquarters is from being left outside in a small crate or pen. Permanently.

I just don’t want this haunting me for the next few weeks.  So here’s what you Floridian Shiba people have to do:

1. Go to the Broward County Animal Care and Regulation building and adopt this dog or at least donate so he can have his face and nails seen to.

2.  Tell them you’re doing it because a Shiba inu blogger in some backwater Canadian town (yeah, Nanaimo, I’m talking about YOU) is stressing out about the damn dog’s photo.

UPDATE:  Some of the people from the SHIBA-L email list are looking into Foxy’s situation. We don’t have a lot of info yet, but according to information gleaned by some of the members, his owner had died and he was a stray.  He had spent most of his life in a cage alone.  Luckily, the awesome Shiba people down south are looking into medical care, rescue and foster opportunities – hopefully we’ll have a happier situation to report soon.

Second UPDATE:  According to my sources on Facebook, SIRA is pulling this guy and getting him some proper care.  Awesome!

Third UPDATE:  According to a source on SHIBA-L:

I spoke to the shelter director, older dog was pulled along with 3 other
dogs that were left in the yard neglected. The OWNER IS NOT dead and
they giving him until the end of the day to decide what he wants to do.
After today the dog becomes property of county and that is pretty much
the end of the story, if a commitment is made to pull him they have 48
hours…Bottom line is that I have a rescue that can pull  but help
folks will have to ready to help with medical expenses AND I NEED
TRANSPORT get him from Ft.Lauderdal to Jacksonville Fla…

DONATE to SIRA or HELP SPONSOR FOXY

  1. This is so very sad, how could someone do this??? I’m surprised he can even stand with those long nails, he also looks like he has a horrible case of yeast and secondary infections, ketoconzol (sp) will fix that right up. Such a sad face for a dog that has so much dignity!

  4. I live in Palm Beach County, Florida. I just called them and asked about Foxy. The woman said that if the dog is at their facility then he will be taken care of (seen by a vet). What a horrific picture.

I have 2 shibas and this makes me sick.

  6. A note on the Shiba List today indicated that the owner was alive and being given options on dealing with the four neglected dogs, including Foxy, after which the dogs would have 48 hours to be pulled. I truly hope that Foxy is being rescued by SIRA or another organization.

Fingers crossed that this sensitive little soul can learn to know love and care in a new home.
