Well, I’m whiling away the hours in the hospital… egads! Let’s write a blog post! Let’s write a blog post and not really edit it because I’m hopped up on adrenaline! That sounds like FUN!
Anyway, as I’ve said before, Tierce is scratching. When we left for Vancouver General Hospital, I noticed that the area immediately around Tierce’s eyes was a little bare. Not great, but Mom and Aunt Pat report that he hasn’t been scratching a lot. That’s a little reassuring, but until I see him again, I won’t know just how much or little.
Jen over at Inu-Baka has mentioned that it’s allergy season where she lives, too. Comments on her blog mention yucca as something that can help a dog with allergies. She is giving Tsuki colostrum and Benadryl and is considering Atopica but wants to see what alternatives are out there. Care to help her/me out? What have you found to be effective in dealing with canine allergies?

I have two shiba inu’s, Bandit and Rowdy. Bandit has allergies this time of the year. I had a holistic vet come to the house and check him out. She suggested the chinese herbs “Great Windkeeper” tea pills and “Jing Tang Dandruff Formula” herbal supplement. I also give him aloe juice in the am. It has definitely helped. He also doesn’t eat any chicken, meat or grains. All my dogs eat Wellness Fish and Potatoes canned and dry. He is not biting his feet or scratching continuously anymore. He will stay on this regime for a couple of months. I refuse to go to prescription stuff for him. I hope this helps other dog/shiba owners.
One of Zuko’s twitter friends had major issues with scratching his ears. He switched to a raw diet – scratchies GONE! His parents felt so strongly about it they wrote a testimonial: http://www.primalpetfoods.com/communities/testimonials
So – whatcha feeding Tierce? Could there be a link? We took Zuko off wheat and corn early on because of scratchies and things got better. This year his allergies can be directly linked to pollen and cleared up with only one dose of Benedryl needed for a really bad pollen day.

we started the yucca root this weekend with tsuki as she scratched her thighs nearly bare. it was 100% humid this weekend and she was in agony..
so far so good, i haven’t seen her scratch at all yet. I’m in contact with two holistic vets to verify the dosage.
Mika’s allergies are, luckily, not too bad. He gets the itchies in the spring in San Diego, but since I’ve taken him on vacation up in Northern California, he has gotten the itchies again and I have been giving him Benedryl (actually the generic benedryl from Costco..) and he has stopped itching for a majority of the day. When he’s itching again in the evening, I’ll give him another Benedryl if it is early evening, if it’s late, I just have him go beddy bye. Good luck!
