I think that if you are afraid of aggressive behaviour, any kind of Shiba mix is not the dog for you. Indeed, I would rethink owning any dog if you are frightened by aggressive behaviour. Dealing with and channelling aggression is part of dog ownership. Every dog has aggression. Whether it becomes an issue depends largely on you.

The good news is that there are many resources for people who are interested in modifying their dog's behaviour. The most well-known are obedience classes, but more and more dog trainers are also offering classes geared to reactive dogs, dogs with specific fear issues and dogs with aggression issues. To channel your dog's aggression appropriately, create an atmosphere that is conducive to learning. Nothing in Life is Free is a good resource.
so I was thinking of getting a shiba inu mix. The mix is maltese and shiba inu. I'm very frightened of their aggressive behavior. Do you think that since it is mixed with maltese that it would be more calm?

So we were visiting friends who happen to be vets (the animal kind). They admired our big beautiful Akita girl then saw "Souda" our black/tan male shiba. "Oh you have one of them.........." they sniffed and turned up their noses at our shiba. I don't know what type of insanity I have contracted but I LOVE Shiba's. Maybe because you have to work so hard to get their love.

Socialization is important for all dogs, but for a dog like this Shiba, you cannot waste the time you have. What I recommend is finding a good trainer who works on extending your dog's boundaries. I personally prefer clicker/marker training. This helps focus the dog on you instead of the big, bad world. You may also want to explore Nothing in Life is Free training to help mold your Shiba's temperament.

I don't think you should give up hope, but be very careful about the older Shiba you do adopt. One option is to go through a reputable rescue that can guide you to a dog with a demonstrated temperament that you can work with. Another option is to contact show kennels and see if they have older dogs who have finished their show careers. Some kennels do this to provide the dogs with a more one-on-one home life after their show career is done. That might be an option for you.

Also keep in mind that older dogs can be trained - in fact when adopting a rescue, it is my opinion that training is imperative to cement the bond between new owner/new dog. Seek out mainly positive-based trainers and remember that, no matter what, your Shiba will humiliate you in some entertaining fashion at some point in your life together.

My son got a male Shiba puppy the first part of February, it is now 4/4/13. I believe he got it from a Puppy Mill. He said it was a breeder...that's what she claimed. Anyway....this puppy is so shy and scared of everything. I now have him because my son is so busy with homework. I need some advice. I have three other dogs but have never had a puppy that's as scared as he is. He does play with my dogs, but is leary of me. I would like to get him in training as I've read Shiba's are very stubborn. Any help would be appreciated.
