Hat 2.0
Here’s a couple more pics, taken after I added what I thought were more accurate markings:

Look, it now has cheek markings!

Tierce approves! Look at his fine example of cheek markings.

I have knitted my very own Shiba hat! And you get to see it and me! And Tierce, but he’s appeared so often that he’s kind of expected.

This took me about a week to complete. The actual hat took about three days, including the ears. I spent about three hours in total, working on the details – there were a lot of pullings out and reworkings!

You can find the pattern for the actual hat at http://www.kittyville.com/knit/kitty_hat.html
The orange yarn came from a very large rainbow-coloured shirt. The white came from my friend, Ramona – thanks, Ramona! The buttons came from Mad About Ewe, a knitting shop in Nanaimo.

Tierce thinks I’m yummy.

I had to put a tail to prove that this is a Shiba hat and not that ridiculous fox-thing “mascot” for the 2010 Olympics. Tierce is modelling an actual Shiba tail.
Well, there you go. The face behind TMS. Don’t all of you go wandering the streets of Nanaimo, looking for my autograph, now.
Dog taped to refrigerator now in foster care![]()
Lisa Pedersen, chief executive officer of the Humane Society, says Rex was placed with a family in the Denver-area that could adopt him by the end of the week.
Pedersen did not identify the family, but says they have other Shiba Inus they have come from other rescue organizations.
“I think he’s adjusting as best as we could have hoped,” Pedersen said. “Our goal is that he has a very happy ending and we think that is very possible.
Pedersen says the shelter got requests from as far away as New York, California and Wisconsin from people who wanted to adopt the dog.
Look at that poor puppy – see the top of his back? Here’s hoping the next news item will be that he is adopted! The foster/adoption family seem as perfect for a Shiba in Rex’s situation as can be – let’s hope it works out!
Abused Boulder dog at home with foster family
Two-year-old Rex is now living with two other shiba inus at the home of a Denver-area couple, Humane Society chief executive officer Lisa Pedersen said Tuesday. She said the foster arrangement is a test to see if Rex can adapt to his new surroundings.
Pedersen declined to identify the couple who took Rex in before an adoption is official, but she said they have experience dealing with abused animals. She said the shelter got requests from families as far away as New York, California and Wisconsin — all of them willing to drive to Colorado to pick Rex up and provide a home for him.
Awesome! Three cheers for Rex! Let’s hope the home he finds can work with him to get him over his abuse issues. It can be an uphill battle, but with a dedicated owner, Rex will at least have a fighting chance to get the life all dogs deserve.
-Thanks to Leslie, who commented on my last post to bring us this link.
Lets remember also that the battle for Rex isn’t over – Abby Toll will appear back in court next month. Let’s keep this alive until the case is over so people will remember what she did!

Here’s a disturbing news item: In the comments on the article “Boulder man gives up custody of dog taped to fridge”, there’s a post from “MountainHaven” saying the following:

Okay, now I am PISSED off! BHS never called me back about fostering him and when I called back, I talked to one of the rudest people I have encountered in a long time. I asked whether there was a foster/behavior home set up for him yet and, if not, I was willing to volunteer to foster him, to get him more acclimated to being a “Shiba” and not a punching bag. We have over 5 acres with half of it fenced with other Shibas. Basically this Bleatch told me to mind my own business, that they knew more than I did and he was being evaluated to see if he needed to be put down! OMFG! It escalated to let me talk to your supervisor and the little twit hung up on me. I have a call into not only the ops manager there to register a complaint but also to the training and behavior center.
This dog does not need to be put down. He needs some attention that is not harsh or hurtful. He needs to be a dog again! I also have a call into the only reputable breeder in CO for Shibas to see if she sold Rex. If so, she needs to be involved as a pet contract through her clearly states that she can take possession back of the dog if abuse is evident or proven.
This is just common sense. I don’t feel I’m a dog’s guardian. I’m the owner but I respect that dogs need to be dogs and there’s consequences if they “make” in the house (just like if my husband misses the toilet!). Firm training, positive reinforcement, good food, other dogs with the same mentality as Rex and, most of all, continued knowledge that a human is not going to duct tape you to a fridge!
I AM SO FREAKIN PISSED!
I certainly hope this report isn’t indicative of the true nature of things.
We have 218 people on the Facebook group “Justice for Rex“! To date, there are 13 photos of Shibas who want justice for Rex and we’re hoping for more
This group is exciting, because there have been some donations made to the Humane Society of Boulder Valley in Rex’s name which were attributable to the group’s publicity.
However, there are many Shiba and general interest bloggers who have also done a lot to publicize Rex’s plight and get people interested in helping him and other abused and needy dogs.
I’m thinking of making a video (using a stuffed toy, not Tierce, ha ha) to illustrate to people what this kind of thing would actually do to a dog. I’ll have to find a suitable Shiba-like toy that I can use and find the battery charger for the camera.

Yeah, I made some changes, because I was tired of all the links taking up every freakin’ last bit of my sidenavs. Yay! More room for advertisements! Well, at least they’re for books I’ve actually read and liked.
In other news, the Official Kitty62 Hat may soon become the unofficial Shiba Hat of no particular number. It came to me that taking this hat pattern, knitting it in orange thread and sewing on some buttons and a white circle for the muzzle would make a Shiba hat! I’ll post pictures when I’m done (if I’m done) and perhaps you may actually see me in a picture for once.
The Humane Society of Boulder Valley has a page for Rex. If you can find it in your heart (and pocketbook), make a donation for Rex there. Or donate to your own local SPCA/humane society/rescue. After all, Shibas are dogs and abused dogs need our help and support.
Abby Toll, who allegedly did this to Rex, appeared in court today.
Now, on to some happy things:
Rex, a 2-year-old shiba inu, will be put up for adoption as soon as he goes through some basic training and behavior modification exercises at the shelter, CEO Lisa Pedersen said.
“Our training staff is working with him to get him over his fear issues, to get him more socialized with people so he can trust humans again,” Pedersen said.
As I was thinking, the boyfriend is being suspected of abuse as well. What a pair.
I wish there was a sorry-we-can’t-risk-your-breeding automatic vasectomy/tubal ligation for cases like these. We certainly wouldn’t want either of these morons educating children in their way of thinking. “Hey, kids, you bored? Here’s a needle, a puppy and some packing tape! Have fun!”
